The Children's Annex is a private, not-for-profit program designed for children with special needs. We are approved by the New York State Office of Education of Children with Disabling Conditions and the New York State Health Department. The school is chartered by the New York State Board of Regents.

The Children's Annex serves children between the ages of 2 and 12. A student may be classified as a preschooler with a disability, or when school age, as a student with autism or multiple disabilities.  Many students also have learning disabilities and communication needs. There is a wide range of intellectual ability and severity of need.

Center-based Children's Annex programs are located in Kingston and Ellenville, New York. Eligible children participate in our day school centers and community-based programs from more than 45 school districts in the Mid-Hudson Valley.

The programs at The Children's Annex in Kingston and Ellenville are located in two spacious buildings designed to provide cheerful, safe,state-of-the-art learning environments to meet our students' needs. In Kingston, our 25,582 square foot facility is on seven acres of land in a beautiful, rural setting. In Ellenville, our 6,400 square foot Special Education Program is located in the heart of town, providing easy access to community resources.

Since its inception in 1976, The Children's Annex has served as a model special education program. We have been host to hundreds of visitors, and have sponsored trainings and seminars for parents and professionals. Annex staff members have presented and consulted nationally on best practices in special education. The Children's Annex has been recognized by New York State Education Department as a School with Effective Practices for the way students with disabilities are prepared and participate in integration in their neighborhood schools.
